The password is dying. Here’s what’s replacing it.

A security card gets you through the door and your password gets you into your system. Two purposes, separate credentials, with one of them being a challenge to keep secure. Passwords can be phished, guessed and reused until eventually, they become breached.

Now they can live on the same card. Ingenia’s FIDO2.1 and PIV credentials bring passwordless login and physical access control together on one ISO card – designed and issued from a global manufacturer, with a worldwide presence.

What is a FIDO card?

FIDO cards ditch the password altogether. Instead of something that can be stolen, FIDO2.1 uses public-key cryptography to authenticate you straight from the card. There is nothing to phish, nothing to leak in a breach and no risk of vulnerability. Built on the Java Card platform, the same tech behind almost seven billion smart card deployments a year, this makes FIDO a tried and tested format for the modern landscape of access control.

PIV in the public sector

PIV is the government ID standard trusted by agencies and contractors who can’t compromise on identity assurance. Pair it with FIDO2.1 and you get high-security government ID with modern, passwordless login – no need to step outside compliance frameworks to modernise.

Built for healthcare and government first, clinicians handling patient records need speed without cutting corners on security. One tap unlocks a ward, log in and access clinical systems. Government teams need identity that’s provable and audit-ready. Either way, this is where phishing-resistant, passwordless credentials matter most.

Compatibility is king

Each card runs on the NXP JCOP 4.5 chip, which can also carry a DESFire EV3 application. This means that the same card that logs you into your laptop can also open the office door. And if you’re still using legacy proximity readers we can add LF 125kHz to the same card, so upgrading doesn’t mean replacing your door hardware.

As a global manufacturer, we build these security cards in four configurations; FIDO2.1 alone, FIDO2.1 + DESFire EV3, PIV + FIDO2.1, or all three together. This integrates effortlessly with your existing access control setup, so all you need to change is your supplier. Ingenia’s logical access cards are fully ISO standard, durable, and compatible with major card readers straight out the box.
